Atelier4 CEO and ICEFAT Chairman Jonathan Schwartz Talks Tech

Atelier4 CEO and ICEFAT Chairman Jonathan Schwartz opines on the impact of technology on the art shipping business on the ICEFAT blog. An excerpt,

There’s a new generation of art logistics, seemingly proliferating, and not on the margins of the industry, but front and center, backed by significant venture capital. Rather, I refer to internet based aggregators, who boast powerful algorithms to spit out and manage what is essentially a highly idiosyncratic packing, storage and shipping process.

JONATHAN SCHWARTZ TALKS TO OBSERVER ABOUT FINE ART LOGISTICS

Atelier4’s Jonathan Schwartz talks to Observer about changes in the fine art logistics industry as the United States weathers the pandemic. This ranges from Atelier 4’s safety protocols, which involve regularly disinfecting surfaces, and determining pre-designated pick up locations, to navigating state shipping laws, which vary state to state.

“At the interior loading dock, we treat everything like it’s contaminated and focus on wiping down everything,” he told Observer. “Every time we address a task, when the task is over, we disinfect ourselves. We don’t relax until we’re in a designated safe zone.”

Goods in transit. JOEL CARRETT/EPA-EFE/SHUTTERSTOCK

Jonathan Schwartz, Atelier 4 CEO and the chairman of the International Convention of the International Convention of Exhibition and Fine Art Transporters ICEFAT) speaks to ARTnews about art shipping during a pandemic. In that latter capacity, he has spent the past couple of weeks calling his colleagues, to offer support and tips. In the former capacity, he over sees the reduced daily operations at Atelier 4.

Atelier 4 has a skeleton crew working at its facility, making sure that the climate control systems are running and ensuring security in addition to video surveillance. At this difficult time, Schwartz has one word for collectors: “patience.” (Most collectors, he said, are fairly understanding.) And that piece of advice ought to be well-heeded, as not all collectors have halted their art-buying habits. With galleries switching to online viewing rooms, many collectors are staying active, carrying out transactions in virtual space. And yet, Schwartz likes to remind them, “Even with the digitization of the collector experience, there will still need to be the transport of work.”

Blog Post Title Four

It all begins with an idea.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
