Colorful watercolor text that reads 'Island of Misfit Crates' with a bright and playful style.

Island of Misfit Crates (IoMC) is where worthy art and object cases go when nobody wants them anymore. We care for these crafted orphans and want to make them available to you, for a price. Nothing is free, pal. But these babies mean not another tree fallen just to be sent to a landfill at the end of its brief existence. Inventories fluctuate, but send us your needs and we will try to match you with some relevant candidates.

Colorful, textured text spelling 'ABOUT' in green, yellow, and purple hues.

When we hear museum quality the first thing we ask is “which museum”? At IoMC, we mainly keep crates in stock with a vapor barrier, such as Tyvek, neoprene gaskets, battens and skids. Some are painted, some have MDO. We try to hang on to the most practical sizes first and we prioritize travel frames with coroplast. If there are problems with the hardware, we will advise you before selling it to you. You can either hire us to remedy that or take them as is for a good price.

Colorful text spelling "SAMPLE" with a textured, crayon-like appearance.

We keep these crates in pest-free, climate stable storage. We do our best to examine donations because we don’t want critters getting anywhere near us for obvious reasons! That said, we accept donations of viable products and they’re from the usual suspects: World renown fine art shippers, yes, even from the competition…

Whom we adore.

Of course, these samples you see here are returns from our own crate shops. The red one is a top-of-the-line exhibition model with the rain hat, closure plates and full surround grey esterfoam.

We use height first, length and then width. The height is the most important as the other two directions aren’t an issue (an empty crate doesn’t need a travel direction*). It’s important to note whether the interior dimensions are “wood-to-wood” or “foam-to-foam” when you are communicating with us about a potential crate that you want us to receive from you as a donation into the IoMC program.

*Travel direction refers to positioning of a crate inside of the carrier’s equipment in either air or road freight.
